Santorini in Easter is quite different from the summer. It combines the wild beauty of the black and red rocks with the blooming nature. All trees and flowers are in their blossom. Just imagine a picture where the green rocks are combined perfectly with the calm blue sea. |
| In Greece, people place great importance in the feast of Easter. They follow all the Christian practices. For instance, they color red eggs that signify the blood of Christ. Moreover, they bake the so called “tsoureki” that is the Easter bread. Specifically in Santorini, women bake a unique sweet which is called “melitini”. It is very unusual due to its taste and shape. During the Holly Week, the Orthodox Church praises the Passion of Christ. In the night before the Good Friday, the girls of each village decorate with flowers the grave of Christ, which is called “epitaphios”. At the night of the Good Friday, the procession of the “epitaphios” takes place around the village. In Santorini, the most impressive procession of the “epitaphios” comes about in the village of Pyrgos. Around the Kastelli castle numerous tins with fire are placed. This is a unique spectacle that you should not miss! |
